La Costeña y El Cachaco (Opposites Attract)

Colombia

The telenovela tells the humorous tale of two people from wildly different geographical regions and backgrounds, who must bridge a cultural chasm in order to find love.

Costeño or costeña is the term for a person from the Colombian coast. Perhaps because of the climate and proximity to the Caribbean, costeños are commonly seen as unbuttoned and carefree. Cachaco is the nickname given to those from Bogota, which sits in a cold valley near the Andes. Inhabitants of the Colombian capital are thought to be rather restrained and uptight.

Sofia Granados is a costeña from Barranquilla who arrives in the port of Santa Marta to launch a tourist-oriented restaurant. Antonio Andrade is an upper-class engineer who leaves his native Bogota for a job in the hot and steamy port, where he suffers a mammoth culture shock.

Their first encounter occurs when the introverted and ultra-boring Antonio, a classical music lover, loses his temper with his next-door neighbor, who insists on playing - rather loudly - that "awful" music called vallenato. Of course, the neighbor is the bubbly Sofia, herself an entire carnaval. Equally of course, their initial dislike will evolve into love, accompanied by the standard complications: In this case, both Antonio and Sofia are engaged to be married to other people.
