The story follows the
double life of Juliana Soler, a 22-year-old girl of humble beginnings and
not-so-attractive physique who was convinced that being alone was her
destiny and that love was something she would never know. Her mother,
Regina, a former model obsessed with beauty, has always made her feel like
the ugly duckling. Fortunately, Juliana has the unconditional support of her
aunt Mercedes and the enchantment of her magic mirror, which transforms
Juliana into the beautiful Maritza Ferrer. However, the mirror's enchantment
comes with strings attached: Juliana can be beautiful only during the day.
When night falls, she returns to her normal appearance. As you might expect,
the leading lady has an unknown and loaded father who ends up becoming her
boss.
Gabriel Mutti is the owner of Mutti Enterprises, an international cosmetics
corporation where Maritza is hired as a chemist. There she meets Marcos
Mutti, Gabriel's adopted son, with whom she falls in love.
Maritza's beauty inspires envy. She must fend off the traps and tricks that
await her at the company, most of them plotted by Barbara Montesinos,
Gabriel's second wife, who will weave a tangled, dark web of self-interest
as she works to appropriate her husband's fortune. She will also have to
protect herself from the hatred she awakens in Xiomara, Marcos' girlfriend,
since Maritza will become her rival after Marcos falls for her beauty.
Juliana is mixed up in the two worlds, but chaos ensues when her magic
mirror breaks, and with it the effects of the enchantment.

In Rubi's

When Rubi visits Maribel's mansion, she grows even more
convinced that she deserves to be rich as well, and she will
do anything to become wealthy.
Maribel is shy due to her physical appearance and handicap,
and spends hours on the Internet. In an on-line chat-room
she meets a kind young man named Hector. They become good
friends through their correspondence, and end up dating in
cyber-space. When Hector and Maribel finally decide to meet,
Hector is shocked by her appearance. But he quickly realizes
that he loves her despite her looks and asks her to marry
him. Maribel happily accepts the proposal.
Hector introduces Rubi to his best friend, a young
orthopedist named Alejandro. Immediately, there is strong
chemistry between them and a deep love is born. Maribel is
happy for Rubi because she finally falls in love with a
rich, handsome doctor who will fulfill her and give her
everything she has always dreamed of. But Alejandro's family
is not rich, and Rubi is forced to choose between marrying
her true love, and continuing her quest for financial
wealth. Sadly, Rubi calls off the wedding, opting for the
pursuit of riches over true love. Alejandro is heartbroken
and decides to leave Rubi forever, dedicating himself to his
medical practice.
Now Rubi is more determined than ever to marry a
millionaire, and is ready to go so far as to betray her
dearest friend. Overcome by jealousy and greed, Rubi plans
to steal Hector's love from Maribel. She seduces him with
her beauty and wins his affection, finally achieving her
heartless goal.

Maria is a
15-year-old scavenger who lives on the outskirts of the
city. She is traumatized by the loss of her godmother, who,
before dying, begs the local priest not to leave Maria to
fend for herself. The priest asks one of his benefactors to
let Maria work as a servant in his house. Instead of taking
her in as a servant, Don Fernando accepts Maria into his
home as his ward, making her an easy target for his jealous
wife and her hostile niece, Soraya. Maria falls in love with
the dashing but drunken and disorderly son of the house,
Luis Fernando, and must battle with Soraya to win his
affections. When Luis Fernando and Maria finally get
married, he walks in on an innocent embrace between Maria
and his brother and storms out in a fit of insane jealousy.
He refuses to believe that he is the father of the baby
Maria is carrying and during a temporary bout of insanity,
Maria gives the baby away shortly after giving birth.
Although Luis Fernando rescues her from the insane asylum

This story
takes place in Colonial Latin America, a time of injustice
and extreme social differences, when the peasants lived
under the iron fist of the aristocratic class, and everyone,
rich and poor alike, lived under the dark cloud of the
Spanish Inquisition.
Maria Hipolita Diaz was raised by her grandmother, Doña
Carlota, in the town of Santa Rita, in Panama. Hipolita was
born in Mexico, but was separated from her mother, Asuncion,
at a tender age, and has never known who her father is. In
exchange for a handsome dowry, Doña Carlota arranges to have
her granddaughter marry Antonio, the son of Doña Adelaida de
Guzman. A few months later, the old lady dies without
knowing that the marriage has not been consumated because
Antonio is impotent, and that Adelaida treats Hipolita with
contempt for being an illegitimate child.
Knowing that Antonio will inherit his uncle Prospero’s
fortune only if he fathers a child, Adelaida forces a
runaway prisoner who was captured by her servants to pass
himself as Antonio and enter Hipolita’s bedchamber at night
to impregnate her. The “criminal” is Luis Manrique y
Arellano, a Mexican merchant who was sent to Santa Rita by
his cousin Diego, the Count of Guevara, to close a business
deal, never suspecting that it was a trap to murder him.
Forced into a corner, Luis accepts Adelaida’s conditions,
with the secret intention of escaping through the window,
but he succumbs to Hipolita’s tenderness and he is powerles
to stop himself. Later, burdened with remorse, he tells her
his story and disappears into the night. Hipolita has not
seen his face and does not know his name; all she knows is
that he is from Mexico.
Three years later, having fled from the wickedness of
Adelaida, Hipolita arrives in Mexico with her son Rafael,
determined to face every hardship in order to find her son’s
father and force him to acknowledge his child. She is soon
swept up in a turmoil of intrigue and violence instigated by
Doña Juana, the sister of the former Count of Guevara, and
she will have to fight for her life and the life of her son,
